BELGRADE (/ˈbɛlɡreɪd/; Serbian: Београд / Beograd; [beǒɡrad]) is the capital and largest city of Serbia. It is situated in South-Eastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and since ancient times been an important focal point for traffic, an intersection of the roads of Eastern and Western Europe. Its name translates to White city.
Through its history, Belgrade, at least since the Roman presence and particularly because of the long Ottoman presence has often been a border town and a place where different civilizations meet and melt together.
